Carolina Hurricanes vs. Florida Panthers 4/7/12 Scoring Chances

There really isn’t much to say about this game other than the Canes got off to a horrible start and score effects did the rest. Congratulations to the Florida Panthers on winning the Southeast and making the playoffs for the first time in over a decade. This isn’t the way that I wanted the Hurricanes to end their season but a rebuilding team is going to take their lumps. Carolina had a miserable first half to the season and it looked like they were destined for a lottery pick, but they have improved a lot since January and it looks like there are some pieces here that we can possibly build something with. It’s too bad that the season had to end on a losing note, but don’t let it erase the great things we have seen over the last couple of months.

Now it’s time to look forward to the off-season and what Jim Rutherford will do with the Canes #8 pick.

Carolina’s chances are in red, Florida’s are in white

This is what a game normally looks like when a team gets off to a good start and then sits on a lead for the remaining two periods. Scott Clemmensen had to make a few big saves, but the defense in front of him did a great job when it counted, which is more than I can say for Carolina’s defense. When you have an aggressive goalie like Brian Boucher, it probably isn’t a good idea to let a forward stand in front of the net by himself, and with the puck no less. It’s remarkable how poor the defensive play of this team has been at times and we saw that tonight.

Jeremy Welsh played pretty well in his NHL debut, his two penalties aside. He was driving the net well and was definitely taking advantage of the ice time that Kirk Muller was giving him. He had a couple very good scoring chances and the play was going in the right direction when he was on the ice. No points or goals to show for it, but he had a solid NHL debut in my mind.

Head-to-head at five-on-five

Weiss and his line got the job done tonight and so did Goc against the Staal line. There isn’t much else to say here about the matchups so I will just let you all make your own interpretations.
