Game 35 By the Numbers: Capitals at Hurricanes

Sometimes, the most frustrating games are the ones where the team plays well enough to win, but they end up going home empty-handed thanks to a few things going wrong. This is what happened to the Hurricanes in their 4-2 loss to Washington last Friday night. Carolina played one of their best games of the season, dominating the Caps at even strength, but ended up coming home with nothing to show for it. They can pin this on Washington winning the special teams battle, going 3/4 on the power play, and them running into a brick wall known as Phillip Grubauer. The young German goaltender was terrific on Friday night and had it not been for him, this game probably would have been a shootout. The Canes did enough good things to have something to build on here, but not getting anything from this effort really stings. It was one of those games where you just have to tip your hat to the other goaltender, stay the course for the next game and hope that you get a better result.

Game 35 By the Numbers: Capitals at Hurricanes

This is coming a few days late thanks to Game Center Live's 48-hour blackout rule, but I just wanted to get the scoring chance numbers from the Washington game up so that everyone can see them. It was one of the few games of the losing streak that Carolina probably "deserved" to win but ended up on the losing end because of a terrible performance in net by Justin Peters & Dan Ellis. Despite greatly outplaying Washington for two-thirds of the game, the Canes were trailing 5-3 and then Washington was able to settle things down and force the Canes to play their game. The Canes were guilty of some bad defensive breakdowns on a couple of the Washington goals, but they had limited the Caps to only 19 shots & 11 scoring chances. Allowing five goals on that kind of a workload is inexcusable on any goalie's part.

The Hurricanes played a good game but got a bad result and I was hoping they could at least build off this for Thursday night against Tampa Bay, which did not happen obviously.

After outplaying Washington for two periods, the Canes found themselves trailing 5-3, which allowed the Caps to settle things down a bit and the Canes looked much more timid as a result. Certainly not the first time that it's happened to the Canes this season and it wasn't the last either since happened two days later against the Lightning.

I'm not sure what more Jordan Staal & Jeff Skinner have to do get on the scoresheet at this rate because they are producing chances and not getting rewarded for it. This is something that has been occurring for a few games now and I have a feeling that both will have a strong finish to their seasons if they keep it up.

The entire defense corps played pretty well aside from Tim Gleason, who was mauled at even strength. Losing Pitkanen in the second period proved to be huge since he was having a terrific game before injuring his foot on a meaningless race for the puck. He and Jamie McBain had a few rough games before this one, but the Canes are going to really miss his presence in the lineup.

Every Caps forward was held in check except for their first line of Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson. They led the way for Washington on the scoresheet and their underlying numbers also reflected their play. Washington's second and third lines took a beating in the scoring chance department but Carolina could only make them pay once with Jiri Tlusty's opening goal.

Head-to-Head at Five-on-Five

In an interesting matchup decision by head coach Kirk Muller, he decided to put Jordan Staal's line against Mike Ribeiro instead of Ovechkin while Eric Staal's line faced them. Ribeiro is having a great year and has done some damage against the Canes, but wouldn't it be smarter to put the team's best two-way player on Washington's first line? It's not like Ovechkin isn't red hot or anything like that. You can see that Jordan's line handled Ribeiro nicely while Washington's first line beat the Staal line handily at even strength.
