Game 37 By the Numbers: Blue Jackets at Hurricanes

The Hurricanes gave their fans plenty of grievances to air on Festivus as they let two points slip out of their hands Monday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Up 3-2 late in the third period, the Canes looked like they were about to skate their way to a hard-earned win. They had controlled the play for most of that frame and were doing a very good job of keeping Columbus' offense quiet by pinning them into their own zone. Unfortunately, a couple of mistakes ended up throwing things off course.

After having a good scoring chance stopped by goaltender Mike McKennna, Carolina forward Jiri Tlusty tried to kill time by skating around with the puck in the offensive zone. He ended up coughing it up at the offensive blue-line and Columbus was able to turn this into an odd-man rush after Ryan Johansen beat defenseman Brett Bellemore in the neutral zone. Despite the best efforts of Tim Gleason to break up the play and Bellemore to get back into the play, the Jackets ended up capitalizing on this and tied the game with less than five minutes to go. The story doesn't end there.

Carolina appeared to be shell-shocked after this, as the Jackets took over the game and added on another goal less than 90 seconds later and that was enough to win it for them. Hockey is a fluid game where the tables can turn in any second and the Hurricanes found that out the hard way with this loss. They did a lot of good things and played well enough to win, given the advantage they had on special teams, but they still let Columbus hang around late and one mistake ended up costing them the game. It's a story we're all too familiar with at this point and it's tough to figure out what they'll do from here.

They could at least walk away from the losses to Washington and Tampa Bay with some positives, as they played very well in the former and earned a point in the latter. This one, however, just stings. Carolina was about five minutes away from getting a big divisional win but made a couple of critical mistakes that ended up costing them the game. Not exactly the note you want to go off on heading into the Christmas break, especially with the Metropolitan Division leading Pittsburgh Penguins waiting for them on the other side.
