Game 51 By the Numbers: Senators at Hurricanes

The Hurricanes offense has really become unleashed over the last week or so, averaging 4.4 goals over the last five games and a good chunk of that production has come from the first line. This is what made Saturday's 6-3 win over the Ottawa Senators slightly more satisfying. Out of the six goals Carolina scored that afternoon, only one of them came from the first line and the bottom-six produced the other five goals. Secondary scoring has been hard to come by for the Canes this year and it's magnified the scoring issues the first line had earlier in the year. They aren't going to get on the scoresheet every night, so getting production from the guys at the bottom of the lineup is critical and hopefully we'll see more of this in the upcoming weeks.

Kirk Muller deserves some credit for this, as he decided to shake up the top-six by reuniting Jiri Tlusty with Alex Semin & Eric Staal while putting Jeff Skinner & Elias Lindholm with Jordan Staal. This bumped Nathan Gerbe, Jordan's wingman for most of the year, down to the third line with Manny Malhotra and the move seems to have had a positive impact on the entire lineup. The first line has struck gold this past week, Jordan's line has more of an offensive punch and Gerbe makes the third line slightly more of a scoring threat than they were earlier. He also doesn't seem to out of place here because he was essentially on a "checking line" with Staal & Dwyer and hasn't had much of a problem adjusting to this new role.

It's a small sample, but we've seen some promising things from the Canes offense this past week and their performance against Ottawa was very encouraging. Carolina handled the Sens well back in November and Saturday's game was a similar story, where the Canes cashed in on a big second period to seal up a win.

The second period was the only thing worth writing about in this game. Both teams seemed to be feeling each other out in the first and the Hurricanes were mostly focused on protecting their two-goal lead in the third. All hell broke loose in the second period, though and the Hurricanes were the team controlling the play for most of that period. They scored a couple quick goals to get a 3-0 lead early in the period and didn't allow the Sens to do much of anything for a good 5-6 minutes after that. After Riley Nash's goal, the Canes began to take their foot off the gas pedal and Ottawa made it interesting with Kyle Turris scoring a couple of goals, including a shorthanded tally late in the period. If it wasn't for Tuomo Ruutu answering with a power play goal, this game could have been a lot more interesting, but the Canes did what they had to do in the third to put the game away.

Another good win, but far from a perfect game and Carolina's offense bailed them out of a couple of tough situations.
